Meghan Markle’s half-sister is attempting once again to sue the Duchess of Sussex with claims of defamation and libel as a result of Meghan’s remarks during her March 2021 interview with Oprah. While Meghan told Oprah that “she grew up as an only child,” Samantha has other ideas, claiming she was “integral in [Meghan’s] life until she was 12.” Now, the 58-year-old is suing Meghan for causing her “professional and social harm.”
Samantha Markle has tried once before to sue the Suits actress in March 2022, but the case was dismissed this past March. Samantha is not the only Markle to slam Meghan in the media: her father, Thomas, has also made frequent public appearances condemning his daughter. Keep reading for more information.
Meghan Markle says she is an only child in Oprah interview
In Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's bombshell interview with Oprah in March of 2021, Oprah asked the actress what her thoughts were on Samantha's "supposedly tell-all book" about her, titled, The Diary of Princess Pushy's Sister.
"I think it'd be very hard to tell all when you don't know me. And I mean, this is a very different situation than my dad, right? When you talk about betrayal, betrayal comes from someone that you have a relationship with, right?" Meghan responded, implying she had no relationship with her half-sister.
She continued, "I grew up as an only child, which everyone who grew up around me knows. The last time I saw [Samantha] must have been at least 18, 19 years ago. And before that, 10 years before that." There is a 17-year age gap between the half-sisters, so it is not surprising that Meghan claims they weren’t close.
The ex-royal also revealed that her half-sister went by the name Samantha Grant until Meghan started publicly dating Prince Harry: "She changed her last name back to Markle in, I think she was in her early 50s at that time, only when I started dating Harry," the Duchess explained.
Samantha, who suffers from multiple-sclerosis and uses a wheelchair, even claims that their close relationship continued into Meghan's adult life, and that "it was after the Duchess met and became engaged to Prince Harry that their relationship became estranged and hostile."
Now, the mother-of-three is suing Meghan for making her out to be an 'imposter,' 'deceptive opportunist' and a 'charlatan' in her Oprah interview, and is seeking damages in excess of $75,000 for the professional and social harm that Meghan has supposedly caused her.
Samantha Markle slams her half sister
Samantha Markle was seen outside of a Florida courthouse on Nov. 8th, and spoke with Fox 13 about her plans for the potential trial: "I think the truth stands on its own, so I'm optimistic and thankful that we have a justice system that gives us the chance to present the facts," she said.
"People change, they have agendas, they have other things influencing their lives and, you know, it doesn't change reality," she continued. The 58-year-old also said she hopes that "some day [Meghan] can embrace the truth and a better part of herself," but until then, until then she has "to get back a lot of [her] life that was lost from a lot of damage over several years."
