Meghan McCain has never been one to shy away from controversy, and the 37-year-old former ‘The View’ host just opened up about the circumstances that led to her leaving the popular talk show in her new book “Bad Republican,” and a corresponding interview with Variety. After serving as co-host on the show for four seasons, McCain left the program in August, and is now revealing the details of the “toxic work environment” she escaped from.
A prominent conservative host on the show, McCain shared that her decision to leave after four years was not an easy one, but her time on ‘The View’ also came with its own set of struggles. Speaking candidly in an interview with Variety following the release of her audiobook “Bad Republican” she said, “For me personally, it felt extremely isolating because of my political ideology. I was the only conservative on the show. The third year, they ended up hiring a producer for me who was also conservative.”
McCain also opened up about the persistent leaks to the media that she was often “cold” on set, explaining, “There were never bad stories leaked about anyone else, and there was certainly bad behavior that could have leaked. Do you think all those women are peaches and cream in the morning? Are you f*****g kidding me? But it was always like, “Meghan is …” I thought it was unfair.”
Throughout her four years on the program, McCain was embroiled in frequent controversy with her co-hosts which eventually took a toll on her mental health. In December, co-host Whoopi Goldberg said to McCain, “girl, please stop talking,” during a conversation about Donald Trump’s impending impeachment, which the 37-year-old shared was particularly damaging. “It was humiliating for me, and I’m a serious person. I felt like I was being talked to like I was a child and a brat. And when things go viral on Twitter and people write things, it really does impact you. I felt very lonely.”
According to McCain, she decided she would be leaving ‘The View’ on her second day back from maternity leave when co-host Joy Behar had told her that no one missed her while she was gone. “This is my narrative — “I come back from maternity leave and no one missed me,” she shared, admitting that she went to her office after the comment and had a panic attack.
Since leaving ‘The View,’, McCain has joined The Daily Mail as a regular columnist, tweeting, “Everything in my life these days is about going back to basics. I started as a columnist & am thrilled at the chance to return to it @DailyMail – I am so excited to work in a completely uncensored free space.”
