We spoke with Barbara Kovalenko, a registered dietitian and nutrition consultant at Lasta; and Joanna Wen, certified health coach and founder of Spices & Greens, to learn about their go-to detox drink that can aid in boosting metabolism, cleaning your gut, and also help with weight loss. Green Tea Detox Drink

Green tea is renowned for its potential to enhance metabolism, cleanse the gut, and contribute to weight loss, making it a popular choice in detox drinks. Rich in antioxidants and caffeine, green tea has been associated with an increase in metabolic rate, which can aid in burning calories more efficiently. Moreover, the catechins in green tea are believed to promote digestive health by soothing the gut and supporting the body's natural detoxification processes. The combination of these factors makes green tea a beneficial component in detox drinks designed to boost metabolism, improve gut function, and aid in weight loss when incorporated into a balanced and healthy lifestyle.

"Green tea contains antioxidants that may help protect against cellular damage and inflammation. It may also help boost metabolism and promote weight loss," Kovalenko says.

Wen says that green tea "contains high amounts of powerful antioxidants called catechins, which are known to have numerous positive effects on the digestive system that help prevent bloating. Studies show that these catechins help to reduce inflammation in the gut and can even inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria in the intestines."

All you need for this drink is 1 green tea bag, 1 cup hot water, 1 tsp honey (optional).

The Bottom Line

Despite the benefits of this detox drink, Kovalenko says you should know your limits when it comes to detoxifying your body through beverages. "The liver, kidneys, and lymphatic system are all part of the body's internal cleansing mechanism. Together, these organs support the body's detoxification process. If you decide to consume detox beverages, it's crucial to do so sparingly and as part of a generally healthy lifestyle. Choose beverages that are prepared with full, natural ingredients, and stay away from those that have sugar or artificial sweeteners added."
