If you’re trying to lose weight, you’ve likely been making some changes to your diet, like cutting out fattening processed foods and upping your vegetable intake. Not only can a healthy diet provide your body with all the nutrients and energy it needs to take on whatever the day throws at you (including your fat-blasting workouts), but it can also play a role in boosting metabolism. And as it turns out, oatmeal is often touted as one of the best weight loss-friendly, metabolism-boosting breakfast options thanks to its numerous health benefits—especially when you add the right toppings to the mix. In most cases, you can’t go wrong with some nutrient-packed fruit.

To get a rundown on some of the best fruits you can add to your morning bowl of oatmeal to keep your metabolism as fast as possible, we checked in with registered dietitian and nutritionist Krutika Nanavati. She told us that apples, berries, and bananas are among the superior choices. Learn more about the benefits of each of these fruits below!

1. Apples

Whether or not an apple a day can really keep the doctor away, Nanavati says adding apples to your oatmeal is certainly one good way to give your metabolism (and your digestion!) a boost.

"Apples are a great source of vitamin C and fiber which helps aid digestion," she tells us. In addition to helping keep your digestive system health, vitamin C is also important when it comes to maintaining a healthy immune system and supporting metabolism. It can even help boost the production of carnitine, a compound that helps the body burn fat for energy.

"Apples also contain complex carbohydrates that provide energy for your body as it breaks down food and burns calories," Nanavati explains. Amazing!

Speaking of good sources of vitamin C, Nanavati also puts berries like blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, and strawberries high up on the list of the best options. The health benefits of berries are plentiful, and that includes metabolism-boosting properties. These tiny but mighty fruits are also packed with antioxidants and fiber, "which all help to kick-start your metabolism," Nanavati says.

"Blueberries, raspberries and blackberries are especially rich in phenolic compounds, which have been shown to reduce fats in the blood, helping to improve metabolic health," she tells us. Luckily, they also taste great in a range of oatmeal recipes.

3. Bananas

There's so much to love about bananas. Not only are they famously packed with potassium (which can help lower your blood pressure, among other benefits), delicious, and versatile, but according to Nanavati, they can also help you shed pounds faster. "Eating bananas regularly can help increase your metabolic rate," she confirms.

"Bananas contain several important nutrients such as dietary fiber, potassium, magnesium, and vitamins B6 and C that are essential for a healthy metabolism.," Nanavati explains. "Dietary fiber helps with digestion and can help you feel full longer so you don't overeat, while potassium helps maintain the balance of electrolytes necessary for optimal metabolism. Magnesium helps produce energy from carbohydrates, proteins and fats in your body, while vitamins B6 and C are both involved in breaking down macronutrients into smaller molecules so they can be utilized by the body more effectively." Talk about a superfood!
