Michelle Obama has stayed relatively quiet throughout election season, but the former First Lady didn’t hold anything back when she spoke out on her Instagram on November 16, publicly denouncing Donald Trump and using her platform to call for a “smooth transition of power.” Obama addressed Trump’s racist past, as well as how difficult it was to welcome the new first family into the White House in a lengthy caption she paired with a photo of herself and former President Barack Obama.

While Obama spoke of her attempt to introduce the Trump family into the White House and pass on what they’ve learned over the last eight years, she expressed how difficult it was to take the high road in a situation where she felt unprepared to move forward. She admitted, “Donald Trump had spread racist lies about my husband that had put my family in danger. That wasn’t something I was ready to forgive. But I knew that, for the sake of our country, I had to find the strength and maturity to put my anger aside.”

She continued discussing the situation, making a pointed comment which could be easily determined who it was intended for. She wrote, “Our love of country requires us to respect the results of an election even when we don’t like them or wish it had gone differently--the presidency doesn’t belong to any one individual or any one party.” She might as well have sent that message directly to President Trump himself!

The former First Lady went on to say, “So I want to urge all Americans, especially our nation’s leaders, regardless of party, to honor the electoral process and do your part to encourage a smooth transition of power, just as sitting presidents have done throughout our history.” Preach!

The Instagram post follows a dramatic election, and two weeks after the day, Donald Trump has still refused to concede his presidency, instead insisting to pursue investigations into the legality of the election. Michelle Obama is well known for being an advocate for her country, and this instance is no exception as she called for the President and other lawmakers to allow for America to move forward and trust the electoral process. We love a boss woman!
