For context, Liam dedicated Bruno Mars' song "When I Was Your Man" to Miley back in 2013, shortly after they broke up the first time.
The lyrics "I should have bought you flowers and held your hand / Should have gave you all my hours when I had the chance / Take you to every party 'cause all you wanted to do was dance" apparently resonated with Hemsworth after their first split, but they took on a new meaning after their second split, sung back to him by Miley.
'Flowers' Lawsuit Reportedly 'Reopened' Wounds For Miley Cyrus, Despite Being 'Very Happy' With Her Current Relationship
Over two years after first being linked, a source confirmed to People that Maxx and Miley were living together and were "very happy." The insider said: "Miley has changed a lot in the past couple of years. She seems more calm and harmonious. Everyone loves Maxx. He's a great guy."
The source went on to add: "He's private and doesn't like being in the press. It's been good for her."
Although the Last Song actress is said to be extremely "happy" with her current relationship with Morando, revisiting her relationship with the Hunger Games actor for the sake of the lawsuit is apparently affecting her mental health – and she feels she deserves some closure!
"Miley – for the most part – has put Liam behind her, but this business with the lawsuit has really set her off again and got her very anxious and freaked out because it's all coming out that she wrote this song about him," an insider reportedly spilled to In Touch.
"She was still very angry and hurt when she wrote that song," the insider explained, before adding that she "didn't exactly try to hide" that the song was "directed towards him" but it was "really not something she wanted to be forced to talk about."
Miley Cyrus Reportedly Wants To Get Some 'Closure' On The Whole 'Painful Chapter' But This 'Isn't Going Over Well' With Her Current Boyfriend
The insider went on to say that being forced to talk about the song – including the fact that it was inspired by her ex-husband – is a very "painful" experience for the "Angels Like You" singer. "It's looking like she may have to go on record in court and explain her motivations behind the song, which is just very, very painful," they said.
"It's reopened old wounds that she thought were healed, but the level of emotion this has triggered has really made it clear she's got more healing work to do," the source continued, before noting how this whole situation could have a negative effect on the Grammy winner's current relationship with Maxx, too.
The source said: "She's now saying she wants to speak with Liam to give him a heads up and get some closure on the whole painful chapter, which isn't going over well with Maxx."
A Little History Into The 'Flowers' Lawsuit
In her song, "Flowers," which as we previously mentioned, was very obviously about her ex-husband, Cyrus sings: "I can buy myself flowers / Write my name in the sand / Talk to myself for hours / Say things you don't understand / I can take myself dancing / And I can hold my own hand."
A source close to the "Wrecking Ball" hitmaker previously explained: "She wrote the lyrics that were a reaction to Bruno's lyrics in Your Man, specifically because that was Liam's song to her. She only cared that he knows it was for him."
However, the "Nothing Breaks Like a Heart" singer then faced a lawsuit accusing her of copying Bruno's song. "Miley is not too concerned with the lawsuit itself, but everyone who knows Miley knows that this track was written as a way of healing from Liam," a source told MailOnline back in September.
"She is worried that she will have to reveal her inspiration for writing the song," the source continued, adding: "While she has no issue stating it was a response to Bruno, revealing it was specifically about Liam publicly and on record is very unsettling."
"At this point, he is just seeing how this plays out and is hoping it gets tossed out before any of that becomes a real possibility," the insider concluded.
