Rolling through the McDonald’s drive-thru is always a gamble. Sometimes it takes five minutes and sometimes it takes 20 minutes. Sometimes your order is spot on and sometimes you’re missing a fry and your soda is diet when you asked for regular. Yet, for some reason, we can’t resist pulling into the drive-thru lane. Here are some tips to ensure that your drive-thru experience goes as smoothly as possible.

Almost all of us has made this common mistake and regretted it—drove away with an incorrect order. The drive thru is there for convenience so we order, pay, and leave as quickly as we can. Except, you should ALWAYS check your receipt and bag of food before pulling out of the parking lot. Yes, it’s the employee’s mistake for messing up your order but you’re stuck with the wrong food if you don’t check before driving away.

Now, don’t be that person who sits at the window opening the packages of five full meals in order to make sure each one is correct. Unless there aren’t any customers behind you, pull away from the window and into a parking spot to check so you don’t hold up the line. Then, if there’s something missing or wrong with your order, you can go inside to fix it instead of waiting in the drive-thru line again, which takes longer, according to an employee.

Another mistake drive-thru customers frequently make is ordering extra sauces at the window, not when placing their order. Some McDonald’s restaurants charge extra if you want more than two sauces so they will have to ring up a separate order just for sauces. Lastly, there is no such thing as a size “regular,” says an employee. It’s small, medium, or large. If you ask for a regular sized meal or drink, employees are left to guess and sometimes that means guessing wrong. Do employees and yourself a favor by keeping these tips in mind so you can have a positive drive-thru experience.
