Almost everyone's hair goals are to have healthier, longer, and thicker hair. However, what many people do not realize is that there are common mistakes that are made in average, everyday haircare routines that actually make your hair thinner. Here are the 5 common mistakes to watch out for that are making your hair thin.

Washing Too Often

Many shampoos contain nutrients that are pertinent to hair growth. But, washing your hair too much may be causing damage as well. “Your hair needs to produce natural oils,” says Juliette Dallas-Feeney, senior social media manager and beauty influencer at Birchbox. “If you wash it too much, you can strip your hair of them." If you're concerned about buildup from not washing your hair enough, you can use a dry shampoo instead.

Using Wet-Look Products

"Avoid any wet-look products, such as mousse or gel, as this makes the hair separate and look sparse and thin," says Megan Stevens from Jamie Stevens Hair. These products can expose the scalp, creating an illusion that makes the hair look thinner.

Wearing Tight Hairstyles

Pulling the hair into tight styles like ponytails can thin the hair and even cause traction alopecia. "Tying your hair with tight hair bands and pulling it back firmly with clips is a bad idea," says hairdresser Andrew Collinge. "Instead, wear your hair tied in a loose, low bun, as this is more gentle and will make your hair appear thicker."

Using Too Much Heat

Too much heat from blow dryers and curling irons can cause hair breakage and thinning. “Once the cuticle is damaged, the moisture balance is disrupted and your hair is more prone to breakage,” says hair transplant surgeon Dr. Alan Bauman.

Not Using The Right Brush

Using the wrong brush for your hair type can also contribute to thinning hair. Celebrity hairstylist Andre Walker recommends a small natural bristle brush for teasing or backcombing to create a thicker, more voluminous look. “The dense bristles of this brush help with locking the strands together, creating a strong base for volume."
