A quality moisturizer will do exactly what its name implies: it will add an abundance of moisture to your skin to help ward off dryness and minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. But, believe it or not, some moisturizers contain ingredients that can have the opposite effect on your skin. If you’re noticing your complexion is actually drier, or isn’t receiving the boost of hydration that you expect from a moisturizing cream or lotion, it’s time to take a glance at its list of ingredients to determine whether it’s a keeper. This is the one moisturizer ingredient that is wise to avoid to prevent premature wrinkling.

Fragrances & Alcohol

Undoubtedly, several of your scented moisturizing products currently contain fragrances, according to Beauty Expert Ava Collins, CEO and founder of Adelaide Examiner. However, this chemical is also a typical irritant — one that can cause rashes, burning, and itching. “Additionally, while fragrance can be included as an ingredient on the back of moisturizers, some companies might not be as open about doing so on the product label,” Collins pointed out. “It’s unlikely that you’ll experience detrimental effects right away after using a product with synthetic fragrances. However, over time, those hormone-disrupting toxins might seriously harm you. Choose your products carefully. Avoid products that have ‘parfum’ or ‘fragrance’ at the end of the ingredients list by reading the labels carefully.”

And another big no-no in skincare if you’re worried about dry skin and premature wrinkles: alcohol. Some brands add alcohol to  their moisturizers to make them feel more lightweight, allow the ingredients to penetrate more effectively, or to preserve it for longer. If you have skin that is prone to eczema or rosacea, even a small trace amount of alcohol in your moisturizer may be detected. “The moisturizers to avoid are those that are alcohol-based moisturizers, especially if you have sensitive skin as they may cause damage,” said Dr. Anna Chacon, a dermatologist and writer at MyPsorasisTeam. “The best moisturizers to try are vaseline, hyaluronic acid, those with ceramides. Our skin cells are essentially held together by ceramides to maintain the integrity and health of our skin barrier. A strong skin barrier aids in keeping dangerous substances out and moisture in.”

One moisturizer to try: La Roche-Posay Toleriane Dermallegro Ultra Soothing Repair Face Moisturizer, which is recommended for all skin types (including sensitive skin) because it’s free of alcohol and fragrance and contains soothing shea butter and thermal spring water. And the cherry on top: the French brand earns consistently high ratings and reviews and is touted as an excellent choice for extremely dry skin.
