For this year’s Cannes Film Festival, it seems like new pieces are out, and vintage pieces are very much in! We’ve seen a lot of vintage pieces on the Cannes red carpet over these past few weeks, with Natalie Portman providing us with perhaps the most spectacular one of all!

The 41-year-old Thor: Love & Thunder actress looked incredible at the May December premiere at the Grand Theatre Lumière on May 20th, wearing a show-stopping strapless Christian Dior gown which was inspired by a world-famous Christian Dior gown that was created 74 years ago, and currently belongs to the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. Natalie Portman Wears Christian Dior Couture Dress In Cannes

Natalie's red carpet gown was created by Dior’s current creative director, Maria Grazia Chiuri, and is said to be a modern reimagining of the iconic 'Junon' gown created for the Christian Dior Fall/Winter 1949-50 Haute Couture collection.

Natalie's strapless gown was the perfect homage to it, and featured a white bodice and an intricate petal-reminiscent scalloped skirt with hand-embroidered dark blue embellishments, which the official YouTube account says was inspired by a peacock's plumage. She wore her hair in a sleek and elegant updo, and just went for some delicate yet dazzling drop earrings for jewelry, to let the dress command all of the attention.

Christian Dior's 'Junon' Dress

The original dress was named after the Roman goddess Juno and belongs to the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, although it isn’t actually on display at the moment. The 'Junon' dress, along with the 'Venus' dress also created that same year, are two of the Met's most coveted Dior designs, according to Huffington Post. And according to the Met's official site, where the original dress can be viewed in more detail: "The magnificent skirt of ombréed petals, like abstractions of peacock feathers without their 'eyes,' obliquely references the bird associated with the Queen of the Olympians."

Fan Comments

On the official Christian Dior YouTube account, which shared a video of the Oscar-winner getting ready to walk the red carpet, many of her fans flooded the comments section with praise! "The dress is a true work of art," raved one fan, while another said, "The dress is perfect and Natalie couldn’t be more adorable."

"Omg, talk about gorgeous!" exclaimed another, adding: "She's literally the epitome of Dior! I'd like to see more recreations of archival pieces, especially if the techniques being used to create them are the same." "Beautiful dress and so much talent in these sewers and designers. Perfect for Natalie to wear this amazing gown," said another. "Gorgeous! Absolutely stunning! The artwork on the dress is breathtaking! Natalie Portman is always classy and pitch perfect in style," gushed another fan, while another added: "Natalie Portman is the personification of timeless beauty and elegance."
