Akin to Angelina Jolie, who wowed us all at the Eternals premiere earlier this week, Natalie Portman has also been quite absent from the red carpet lately. However, just like Jolie, the 40-year-old Black Swan actress made quite the triumphant return with an extremely bold and unexpected sartorial choice!
The Oscar-winner attended the L.A. Dance Project Annual Gala in California on Saturday, October 16th, and she selected something a little different to her usual style for the occasion. It’s clear that the Thor actress wanted to make a bold fashion statement, as she swapped her traditional, timeless gowns with something far more extravagant, and dare we say, seductive! She stuck to her favored color palette – i.e. black accessorized with more black – but went for something with a lot more edge and structure. Best of all, just like so many celebs on the red carpet at the moment, the Jackie actress considered the environment with her sartorial choice, and didn’t go for a brand new outfit, choosing something vintage instead. Yes, Natalie!
When you're a world-famous Academy Award winner, vintage doesn’t mean raiding the back of your mom's closet because you can't afford to buy a new outfit. Instead, it means carefully going through the fashion archives of some of the biggest designers on the globe for something that stole the show several decades ago, in the hope that it will also do it again second time around. It was mission accomplished, as Portman's Mugler 1981 Haute Couture Vampire dress with a deep, plunging neckline that we would never have predicted the actress would wear did just that! Portman let the dress do all the talking and kept the rest of the look super minimal, accessorizing with some simple black sandals and Fernando Jorge jewelry.
Ps – you're right in thinking that the dress looks really, really familiar. No, you haven't hopped in a time machine and transported yourself to the early 80s (although wouldn’t that be fun?!) as the reason you recognize the dress is because Dua Lipa actually wore a velvet, forest green version of the very same dress when she hosted Saturday Night Live back in December last year. A dress that stunning and that interesting was always going to be recognized! Do you prefer Natalie's black dress, or is Dua's deep green version much more your style?
