Weight loss is a common goal for many, and while diet and exercise remain essential, some turn to medications like Mounjaro (tirzepatide) for additional support. These medications work by targeting hormones to reduce appetite and improve insulin sensitivity, promoting effective weight loss. However, not everyone may want or have access to such options, leading to an interest in natural alternatives.

Certain beverages, made with ingredients known to boost metabolism, curb appetite, and regulate blood sugar levels, can serve as a more holistic approach to weight loss. But do these natural alternatives actually work?

The current beverage that’s taking over the internet by storm is called the “natural Mounjaro.” This four-ingredient drink is made with water, lemon, honey, and ginger.

Nature's Mounjaro: Ginger Lemon & Honey Drink

Emily Feivor, a registered dietitian with Northwell, recently told PEOPLE, "The drink is probably being used as a replacement for a heavier meal or a higher-calorie meal than people were typically eating before."

The reason this drink is being labeled as nature’s mounjaro is because it contains natural ingredients that mimic some effects of weight loss medications.

Honey can help regulate blood sugar levels and curb sugar cravings. Ginger is known to suppress appetite and reduce hunger pangs. Lemon, on the other hand, is high in vitamin C and antioxidants, boosting metabolism and fat-burning processes.

However, Feivor says it won't work as well as weight loss medications, especially if you're not practicing a healthy overall lifestyle.

She notes that because you've cut calories by drinking this beverage, you will probably "eat more in the next meal, snack more, because your body is craving that nutrition that we might have skipped in that meal that you're replacing this drink with."

The drink is incredibly healthy, but it's best if it's paired with a balanced meal.

The bottom line

Even if this drink doesn’t lead to significant weight loss, there’s no reason to overlook its benefits. These ingredients offer numerous health advantages, including use in wellness shots to help combat the flu during colder months and provide relief from congestion.

While the viral "nature’s Mounjaro" drink may not deliver the same weight loss results as medications like Mounjaro, it offers a range of health benefits worth incorporating into your routine. It's important to view this drink as a supplement to a healthy, balanced diet rather than a replacement for meals. Pairing it with nutritious meals and maintaining an active lifestyle is key to achieving sustainable weight loss and overall health.
