If a faster iPhone is your priority, the apps that you use should be one of your first focuses. A number of apps can slow your phone down because they are resource-intensive, which is to say: they are required to work very hard for you. Whether they are storing your music and videos or providing constant and consistent news updates, these are the apps that are multitasking dynamos. Unfortunately, many social media apps fall into that category.

Social media apps are busy bees that store a lot of data and have a variety of jobs to do. When it comes to deciding which of these apps you shouldn’t download if the trade-off is a faster iPhone, these three consistently appear at the top of tech experts’ lists.

Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok

You can make an anti-social media argument for every social media app under the sun, from Facebook to X. But by just focusing on Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok, you’ll be able to see how these three apps are extremely taxing on your device.

All three of these apps load and cache high-resolution images and videos. The apps often save large files, and if you don’t have enough storage on your device as it is, you can run out of storage and your phone can run very slowly because of this.

Animations and Graphics

The complex and intense animations and graphics on Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok, as well as any one of these components that includes video, slows down devices.

Background Activity and Notifications

Social media apps are constantly running in the background to refresh content and data. They also check for new messages and push notifications, all of which use CPU cycles and RAM and can lead to slower performance.

If you are not ready to delete these apps from your phone, it’s important to routinely delete old files (especially images and videos) that your phone is storing from these apps. Taking as many steps as possible to reduce the storage space these apps consume can help.
