Why You Should Never Order Diet Soda At A Restaurant

November 7, 2017 by Emily Belfiore

There's no better time to treat yourself than when you're going out to eat. It's when you're presented with a delicious variety of food and beverages that you don't always get to enjoy at home and encouraged to try something new. For most people, this is when they decide to order soda. But, most waiters say that isn't the smartest drink decision you can make...

"Every single place I worked had mold in their soda gun or machine," an employee said, according to Life Hacker. "I cleaned them, of course, but there’s only one of me and a few million restaurants." Um, ew!

This employee wasn't the only person who claimed that the soda guns and machines at restaurants are filthy. Writer Rob Gunther, who used to work at a restaurant, said that the soda machine at his place of employment was so dirty that there were even BUGS in it!

He wrote, "[I] lifted up the cover behind the Seven-Up label. Right underneath the surface of what looked like such an inviting piece of machinery was one of the grossest things I’d ever seen: dozens upon dozens of cockroaches, little medium-sized ones, frightened by the sudden exposure to light, running around in ribbons of brown as they made a desperate attempt to slink back into the shadows."

Not only do you have to be wary of soda when you're out to eat, but health experts say that you also have to avoid the lemon wedge that comes with it, too! Researchers from the Journal of Health swabbed the rinds and flesh of 76 lemons from 21 restaurants collected during 43 visits and found that a whopping 70 percent of them produced microbial growth. Yikes!

Wow, we are definitely never ordering soda from a restaurant ever again. And, you can bet that we won't be asking for any lemon with our waters, too!
