If you rely on your morning cup of coffee as an essential step to starting your day, you are not alone. The good news is that on its own, coffee is actually pretty healthy for you. While you should never over-do it with caffeine, coffee is beneficial to weight loss because it speeds the metabolism and is high in fiber. The bad news, however, is that coffee isn’t healthy for you if you are adding the wrong ingredients to it.
Though it is one of the most common ingredients added to coffee, sugar is also one of the worst things you can put in the drink. Many people like it because it adds instant sweetness to the otherwise bitter drink, but unfortunately it can also cause instant weight gain to your body.
Sugar slows your metabolism, causes weight gain and can even put you at risk for a variety of health conditions. Plus, it can accelerate the aging process on skin and has even been linked to causing acne.
The daily recommended intake of sugar is six to eight teaspoons, so if you are drinking two cups of coffee each day and adding a teaspoon of sugar each time, you are already taking in at least 25% of your daily limit. Then if you eat anything else sugary on top of that, you are very likely to eat too much sugar.
Instead of adding sugar to your coffee, try flavoring the drink with cinnamon. It is flavorful without causing any negative side effects, plus cinnamon might even speed up your metabolism if eaten regularly.
