Nick Cannon Talks About Life Married To Mariah
Mariah Carey is one of the best selling artists of all time, and while Nick Cannon may be a household name, he's nowhere near the stardom that Mariah Carey has secured. This, Cannon reflects, is the root of why their marriage didn't work out. But let's back up first.
Carey and Cannon secretly got married in 2008, when they were 39 and 27, respectively. A few years later in 2011, they welcomed twins, and this is when their marriage started to crumble. "I got married in my 20s still," Cannon recalled, "to the biggest star in the world. My trajectory was here, and then hers—she's already in a different stratosphere. I would lay up at night thinking, like, 'Is this who I am? Am I Mariah's man? Is that what my life is supposed to be?"
That isn't to say he wasn't enjoying himself. "I got really comfortable in it," he said. "She's got islands. I'm waking up at noon, people bringing me steaks on a platter." But when children entered the equation, things started to change.
Nick Cannon Was Too 'Insecure'
Cannon recalls that the arrival of their twins, Moroccan and Monroe, led to a family "hierarchy" that exacerbated his insecurities. "wait, I'm carrying a purse, the diaper bag. I'm standing on the corner," he says. "She's rockin' being the alpha that she is. And I believe she needs a dude like that. I'm just not that dude."
He shared these feelings with his wife, and even now he praises Carey for being "understanding" as he was trying to make his own career and identity. He got sick of "trying to prove" that he was "a man," and that their marriage simply couldn't work out. Fortunately, the two are still on great terms and coparent their twins easily. If only all celebrity divorces could happen this easily!
