Nicole Kidman opened up about the sorrow of losing her parents, and recently shared a poignant update on her mental well-being after her mother, Janelle Ann Kidman, passed away in September.
The Moulin Rouge! star’s father, Dr. Antony Kidman, had previously died in September 2014 after an accident in Singapore while visiting her sister, Antonia.
In the newly released cover story with GQ, the Academy Award-winning actress, 57, discussed how she has been managing in the two months since her mom’s passing.

"So life is, whew. It's definitely a journey. And it hits you as you get older," Kidman told the publication, noting that "it's a wake up at 3 a.m. crying and gasping kind of thing." The Big Little Lies star continued, "If you're in it and not numbing yourself to it. And I'm in it. Fully in it.”
The mom of two (who shares daughters Sunday, 16, and Faith, 13, with her husband, Keith Urban) explained that her thoughts about life and mortality are "even more so" heightened now as she raises her teenagers.
"Mortality. Connection. Life coming and hitting you," Kidman said to the magazine. She added: "And loss of parents and raising children and marriage and all of the things that go into making you a fully sentient human. I'm in all of those places." Kidman said that she learned of her mother's passing just before attending the Venice Film Festival for the premiere of her new film, Babygirl.
During the awards ceremony, the movie’s director, Halina Reijn, read a letter on behalf of Kidman. This letter served as what would have been Kidman’s acceptance speech for best actress for her role in the buzzing film. Kidman shared that she traveled to Venice, and "shortly after that, my beautiful, brave mother, Janelle Ann Kidman, has just passed."
In an exclusive interview with Vanity Fair this month, Kidman fondly recalled her mother as the person who guided her throughout life. "She was my compass in a way," Kidman shared "It’s like losing that, but at the same time going, 'Okay, well, this is for her then.' So much of what she wanted for my sister and I was to create women in this world who felt like they could express themselves and have opportunities, especially things she didn’t have from her generation."
Sadly, the Eyes Wide Shut alum's mother died before she had the chance to witness her daughter's latest praised performance in Babygirl. "I wish she could have seen this part of it. She was very excited to see Babygirl, and she was excited to see Perfect Couple too, but she didn’t get to see either of those," Kidman said.
During the LA premiere of Lioness season 2 on last month, Kidman also shared with The Hollywood Reporter that she was "hanging in there" following her mother's passing. “I wish my mama was here,” Kidman said. “That’d be the one thing I’d say. Everything is great with work but I wish my mama was here.”
