There is science backing the importance of getting your beauty sleep. Really! It’s not just a fun term your mom made up after watching Sleeping Beauty when you were little, it’s a thing. Every night while you rest, your skin goes into maintenance mode and rejuvenates itself.

During that snooze, your entire body repairs from the day’s hardships–stress, pollution, tension, the whole nine yards. This vital process ensures you wake up not just feeling, but also looking, refreshed.

This is also why when you’re sleep deprived, scary dark under eye bags, along with a whole slew of other skincare issues, pop up. The rejuvenation process while you sleep is natural, but that doesn’t mean there aren't steps you can take to enhance your beauty sleep.

We spoke with two leading board certified dermatologists to get their advice on how to optimize your beauty rest. Here’s what they said.

Don’t just wash your face once, but twice!

“Wash your face twice before bed to wake up with refreshed skin. Often, women think that their face is clean and that all makeup is removed after one rinse, but that’s not the case,” said Dr. Howard Sobel, a Cosmetic Dermatologist in NYC and owner of Sobel Skin. “I recommend going over skin first with a micellar cleansing water based makeup remover, and then washing with a non-soap face wash to remove excess residue.”

Washing your face twice will ensure your skin is completely free of any makeup residue and pore-clogging oils.

And when it comes to the best skincare products to use during your beauty sleep, Dr. Purvisha Patel, board-certified dermatologist and founder of Visha Skincare, has a recommendation.

You probably slather product after product onto your face every night while you sleep, but there’s one that will enhance skin’s rejuvenation better than the rest.

“Use a hyaluronic acid-based eye cream, such as Visha Skincare advanced bright eye booster. This contains water and the hydration gives immediate softening.”
