Before you head off to Sephora to spend more money on the “perfect” foundation, concealer, or lipstick shade, remember: similar to how undergarments make the outfit, your skin prep before makeup will determine the final outcome.

If you have mature skin, this tip is even more pressing. Your skin may already experience dryness and the presence of more texture like lines and larger pores. If you aren’t preparing your skin with a primer before your makeup, you can call attention to texture — not likely to be your desired outcome.

According to Makeup Artist Erica Taylor, this is why you need to begin incorporating a quality makeup primer into your routine.

Why Do You Need Primer?

If you are investing time in your skincare routine, one of the things Taylor says primer does is it binds the results of your skincare routine (in all its moisturized glory) in and creates a smooth canvas surface where foundation and concealer will stick to and stay put. Put simply: it prevents your skin from “eating your makeup” so that your skin stays hydrated and your makeup doesn’t have an opportunity to mess that up.

The primer will then actually grip your makeup for a “smoother application and a longer-lasting wear.”

Your Primer May Need to Change With Age

The primer you used in your twenties might have been a silicone-based one or a primer that is magnifying and saps away oils. In your forties and up, your skin can experience more dryness, so anything that dries it out even further is not a good idea. You can still use those types of primers if you have oily spots on your skin (just place it where you need it) but look for ao more hydrating primer for other areas of your skin.

Some of Taylor’s Favorites

One of Taylor’s favorite primers is Make Up For Ever Hydro Boost, which she calls “hydrating, smoothing, and plumping” and keeps your skincare in, allowing your makeup to go on smoother. This pick has a bit of a tint to it that blues imperfections, as well. A dupe for this primer if you’re looking to save money is Milani Skin Quench, “if you’re a thirty girl.” Taylor says she is also a fan of Milk Hydro Grip Primer, which (as its name implies) hydrates and grips makeup.
