Model Olivia Culpo recently revealed something very personal and heartbreaking that she deals with behind-the-scenes of her seemingly glamorous life.
The 28-year-old former Miss Universe shared with her Instagram followers that she suffers from endometriosis, a painful disorder where uterus tissue grows outside of the uterus instead of lining the inside of it. In a new interview with PEOPLE, Culpo opened up and explained the impact the disorder has had on her and how she was nervous to publicly share her diagnosis.
“It was something that I was nervous to share because I really didn’t know if people would be familiar with the condition, and it turns out a lot of women are,” Culpo said to PEOPLE. “I was shocked to see how many women have also suffered from endometriosis, and how many questions women have about painful periods. They’re not normal, and they could get in the way of your fertility.”
The fashion influencer hopes that by sharing her story she will inspire other women to get the health checkups they need. Taking early action can sometimes make all the difference when it comes to treating and even preventing health issues.
"Down the line, it's so heartbreaking when you think about someone who maybe could have taken action earlier, and now they can't have children,” Culpo shares. “That to me just feels awful."
The social media personality often takes time to promote other areas of women’s health and wellness on her Instagram. To name a few, she shares posts as an Olly vitamins ambassador and as a partner with Crest, and on top of that, she also gives followers the scoop on many delicious healthy recipes.
