For years the salon-favorite haircut has involved layers — whether that means just a few face-framing pieces or an abundance of choppy layers. As more people realize how layers can highlight parts of the face like cheekbones, your jawline, or your eyes, more straightforward one-length styles have been replaced. But hair is so personal. There are pros and cons for each type of style — hair that’s all one length can add much-needed volume and and fullness to thinner hair, for example. With that said, there are also times when one-length haircuts can add years to your look, according to professional stylists. If your goal is to look as current and modern as possible, here’s what you should know about one-length hair — and some alternatives that can give you a fresh appearance.
One-Length Hair: An Expert’s Take
First and foremost, there are no good or bad hair styles. A haircut that doesn’t seem to work on one person can do wonders for another person — so much depends upon your facial features, lifestyle, and personal style.
“Haircuts should be tailored to the person: their desired length, and what makes them feel the very best, their face shape, hair texture/density and lifestyle,” said Nataly Silva from Mirror Mirror Salon in Austin, TX. “With all this in mind, there may be times a one-length haircut is the best move for someone. However, layers and face-framing often creates body and movement. One length haircuts have the tendency to weigh not only the hair down, but can weigh the overall look of someone’s face down as well. Long layers, curtain bangs, and face framing is trending now — it’s giving youthful vibes that can take years off someone’s appearance making them [look] younger.”
Tips For More Youthful-Looking Hair
You don’t have to choose between one-length hair and a mullet — there are plenty of in-between options that give life and lift to the hair.
“Face framing is one of my best tricks for haircuts,” Silva said. “It tends to open up the face more allowing the face features to show more. It also does exactly what it’s named suggest: it frames the face to enhance bone structure which can enhance someone’s overall look. Long layers give the hair movement which when styled can look incredible. With layers, weight is often removed allowing the hair to style better and hold longer throughout the day. I think this hair trend is suggesting a low maintenance maintenance look; a look that says ‘I didn’t try but my hair still slays’ kind of look. I love it, it’s natural, fun, beautiful and youthful look.”
Jean Will, co-founder at NiaWigs, recommends these hair styles and swaps, as well:
Go for shoulder-length
“If it is long and straight with no elevation, it appears to have an outdated, dull appearance,” Will said. “Consider keeping your hair at shoulder length since it might look more voluminous and healthier.”
Part your hair appropriately
“To emphasize a broader eye, I would suggest sweeping your hair from right to left,” Will said.
Add highlights to the hair
“More personality can be added to the hair with highlights,” Will said. “As well as modernizing the look, it improves skin tone. [Highlighted hair] has the power to radiate depth and versatility.”
Incorporate bangs into your hairstyle
Bangs can do a lot more than conceal wrinkles and fine lines. “It gives the style a little edge,” Will said. “It also adds immediate volume, especially to the front area.”
