If you ask 100 different people what their personal phone model preferences are, you’ll receive 100 different answers. We choose phones based on price, features, upgrades, and convenience, but have you ever considered how tech experts go about selecting their favorite phone model? We spoke with two tech experts about the one and only iPhone model they think you should be using in 2021. Here’s what they had to say.
iPhone 10 Pro
It’s easy to assume a tech gadget lover would clamor for the latest and greatest phone, especially when it comes to products created by Apple, which is constantly churning out new technology. But it isn’t always necessary to upgrade your devices if the ones you have boast critical features. Lynda Fairly, founder of numlooker.com, says her preferred phone model is actually a slightly older one: the iPhone 10 Pro.
“In my opinion, the only iPhone model you should be using in 2021 is the iPhone 10 Pro,” Fairly says. “Because the iPhone 10 Pro has every feature that I feel is necessary for someone to use day-to-day. It must have a headphone jack, it must not have FaceID or an edge-to-edge screen, and it can’t be anywhere near as expensive as the current lineup of iPhones. It must also be able to receive at least operating system level updates for the next two years and be able to run most apps that are released in 2021.”
Fairly lists the reasons why the iPhone 10 Pro is her top pick:
- The iPhone 10 Pro has a headphone jack, which I consider a must-have.
- The iPhone 10 Pro does not have FaceID. I believe this is a good feature to have, but it also correlates with the fact that the screen isn’t edge-to-edge.
- I simply cannot fathom buying a device as expensive as the current lineup of iPhones.
- The iPhone 10 Pro must be able to run most apps that are released in 2021 (more on this in a bit).
- The iPhone 10 Pro would be able to upgrade to at least iOS 13 and most likely iOS 14. iOS 14 is expected to release sometime in 2022-2023.
- The iPhone 10 Pro has a larger display than the current lineup of iPhones.
Of course, not all tech experts agree.
According to Stewart McGrenary, director at Freedom Mobiles, choosing the best iPhone is often a matter of price or preference, and his suggestion is the iPhone 12, which comes in three different storage configurations: 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB and color choices are black, blue, green, red, and white.
“What Apple does well is keeping your data secure overall, additional security, from automatically installing security updates, to deleting malicious apps, to deterring hackers, it's all there,” McGrenary says. “You should still take measures to improve your phone security—no matter which device you chose, no phone is impossible to hack, and all systems have vulnerabilities as a result of mistakes in programming.”
When it comes to iPhone model preferences, newer isn’t always better — the model that suits your needs and budget is always the best one.
