Something feels just a little off when you get the feeling your haircut and hairstyle isn’t quite right for you. It could be that you’ve been rocking the same hairstyle for decades and the way your hair has changed over the years no longer suits that particular style. Sometimes the hairstyle we sport feels forced in a way that makes us feel less like ourselves. Other times we could be going too hard with products and creating stiff styles that are reminiscent of a bygone era — which is great if you’re going for a retro look, and less great if your goal is to look fresh and modern.
An outdated haircut can age you and make you feel less confident, but it’s also a simple issue to fix. With a few minor tweaks, you can take these outdated haircuts from blah to brilliant.
Long, Straight, Flat Hair
If your hair is super long, and straight AND flat at the roots, your hairstyle could be showing its age. Celebrating your fortieth birthday does not have to mean booking a trip to the salon to chop off all of your hair. Your hair can look stunning at any length, but the key here is to make sure there’s movement and volume in your hair that makes it look its healthy best. Love your long hair? Keep it. But consider adding a few layers to provide body and lift the eye so that you highlight your facial features a bit better. Long bangs can add a lot to longer hair, as can waves and curls to give fine or thinning hair texture.
Blunt Bob
We’re big fans of bobs — any bob — especially if you have longer, thinning hair and are motivated to give it a classic cut that gets rid of split ends and looks thicker. The bob lands around your chin or slightly longer and can be worn with one layer, with one layer and bangs, or with as many layers as you feel you need to give your hair a lift and body. Generally speaking, a blunt bob can look clean and can bring out the shine in your hair, but can also be kind of boring. If you’re not feeling inspired by your current blunt bob, speak to your stylist about adding layers for movement.
Teased Bouffant
Hair plus height can equal much-needed volume that kicks thinning and fine hair up a notch. But there’s a difference between volume and stiff hair — and the latter can look aging. A teased, stiff bouffant hairstyle can make you look older. If that’s not what you’re after, ease up on the hairspray and welcome a product like root-lifting spray or mousse into your life instead.
One-Dimensional Hair Color
An updated hairstyle isn’t just about the cut — color counts, too. You can make an incredible difference in your hair’s appearance by simply adding a few highlights or balayage pieces to one-dimensional hair color. Hair that’s just one color and lacks natural highlights, include box dyed hair, can appear flat and thinner than it is. Give your hair a bit of dimension to make it instantly look more youthful and fun (picture a child’s hair glimmering in the sunlight as your inspiration).
You don’t have to settle for your same-old hairstyle, nor do you have to make a major change to see a big difference. Avoid outdated haircuts and make simple, small changes to bring your look up to date.
