If you’re over 50 and still searching for your new favorite haircut — the one that looks and feels perfect for you — you’re not alone. And Hair Expert Glam Girl Gabi has several remedies for that (namely cuts that are universally flattering and can give fine and thin hair a great boost):

Gabi suggests giving gorgeous cuts like a blunt bob (with or without fringe), fairy cut (mid-length with lots of cute layers), three-tiered layers, Sabrina Carpenter curtain bangs, mixie, and more. All of these cuts are trendy and gorgeous, though they won’t all work for your hair type if your hair is on the thinner side.

It also helps to arm yourself with a few great game-changing hacks that can add volume that lasts all day — because hair texture and quality can change with the years, and not always in ways that make you feel your best. You may be struggling to get back that oomph your hair once had, or maybe it’s just falling flat at the crown and there’s no haircut that seems to help.

Consider a new haircut to start and to get you glam for the new year, and then keep these seven volumizing hacks in mind.

1. Large Velcro Rollers

Adding large Velcro rollers to sections of your hair won’t necessarily give it a curl (you’ll need smaller rollers for that), but they will give your hair major lift at the roots and create bounce and body. Even better: if you’re trying to avoid heat damage, these rollers get the job done without burning your strands.

2. Cutting Layers Into Hair

We’re all on board the blunt train when it comes to looks like the blunt bob and lob — and these styles can make your hair look denser at the ends. But if your hair is still falling flat on top, adding layers will give it lift and movement.

3. Spritz Dry Shampoo on Roots

Spritzing a bit of dry shampoo on your roots texturizes them and provides a little lift, which is especially helpful if you’re on third-day hair that hasn’t been washed. Just be careful not to overdo it: using dry shampoo too often without washing it out can lead to product buildup that clogs hair follicles and may lead to shedding and scalp irritation.

4. Blow Dry Your Hair With Your Head Upside Down

One of the simplest styling hacks is to toss your head upside down when you’re blow drying or diffusing your hair and dry your hair in this position (at least for a large amount of time). Your hair will automatically achieve great levels of volume and, once you flip your head back, you can curl specific pieces under and style it as desired.

5. Use Root-Lifting Spray

Are you still blow drying or diffusing your hair without using any product in it? You’re missing out on key opportunities to lift your hair at the roots! Try a root-lifting spray that infuses your hair with volumizing ingredients and is activated by heat while you’re styling your hair.

6. Wash Your Hair With a Volumizing Shampoo

Read the labels on shampoo and conditioner bottles and choose wisely. A “volumizing” shampoo often contains proteins, polymers, panthenol, and plant extracts that boost hair texture and make it stronger. These shampoos should moisturize without weighing down your hair and provide the first step toward more body and lift.

7. Tease Your Roots

The T-word (tease) can come off as a dirty one sometimes — blame our collective memories of 1980s sky-high hairstyles. But today’s teasing technique is subtle and effectively gives roots just a little lift before you comb it back to smoothen it out. Give it a try — all you need is a teasing comb, a little bit of hairspray, and some patience.
