Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie joined Alex Cooper on the Call Her Daddy podcast last week to discuss their infamous, headline-making 2005 fallout. The two Simple Life co-stars sported form–fitting black turtleneck pieces for the occasion, with Richie, 43, accentuating her look with a leopard-print coat. Throughout the episode, the duo opened up about the rift in their friendship, which ultimately led to them filming Season 4 of The Simple Life apart.

As Hilton, also 43, noted, the true reason wouldn’t be “good enough” because “nothing really happened.” The “Stars Are Blind” singer (who rocked smokey eyeshadow, bold liner, sky-high lashes, radiant blush and a glossy pink pout) went on, telling Cooper, 30: “Back then, the media was just so toxic and they loved starting feuds between people because, obviously, that sold tabloids.”

The DJ and style icon continued: “So it was mostly the media just spinning things and creating drama that didn’t exist, which was normal in the 2000s. They did it with everyone.” Richie, who wore her center-parted, dirty blonde lob down on the podcast, added that their shared age exacerbated the situation because they “didn’t know how to communicate with each other.”

This, she noted, meant that “if [they] were hearing something, [they] would assume [it was true].” Regarding their mid-twenties selves, Richie shared: “We didn’t have the communication skills we have right now to have check-ins, which is so important.”

The reality star (who also donned shimmering gold dangly earrings, rings, blended eyeshadow, winged liner, rosy blush and a shiny pout) explained that it made her “sad to think about a time without [her] friend.”

She added: “I think it has really helped me [with] communicating at this stage in my life […] And I think just with all relationships, it’s so important to have check-ins and to be honest and real and, you know, tender with the people that you love the most.”

The Candidly Nicole alum stressed that her fallout with Hilton being shown on The Simple Life led it to blow up and become "something that was so big that it became impossible to connect to or have any sort of real feeling around it." She also said the feud was "otherworldly."

During the episode, Richie and Hilton (who wore her middle-parted blonde tresses down and styled into loose waves) concurred that their long-standing bond, which began when they were just two years old and was supported by their families' friendship, had allowed them to repair their relationship.
