Pasta, a beloved staple in many diets, often gets a bad rap for contributing to weight gain. However, not all pastas are created equal. Certain types of pasta are loaded with fiber and can be a healthier option that supports weight management. High-fiber pasta varieties provide a slower release of energy and promote satiety, helping to control appetite and prevent overeating. Unlike traditional refined pasta, these fiber-rich alternatives can be included in a balanced diet without the same risk of weight gain.
We checked in with Lisa Richards, a nutritionist and creator of the Candida Diet; Dr. Andrea Maxim, MNLP, MChT, ND, a licensed naturopathic doctor, master NLP practitioner, and weight loss expert; and Dr. Cameron Heinz, to learn about three different types of pastas to try next time if you want to satisfy your cravings and also lose weight. They revealed that red lentil pasta, konjac root pastas, and kelp noodles are the ones to go for.
1. Red Lentil Pasta
Red lentil pasta is packed with dietary fiber, which plays a crucial role in weight management. Fiber helps to promote satiety by slowing down digestion and keeping you feeling full for longer periods. This can reduce overall calorie intake and help curb cravings between meals.
"Red lentil pasta is high in dietary fiber. Fiber-rich foods help promote feelings of fullness and satiety, reducing the likelihood of overeating and snacking between meals," Richards explains.

2. Konjac Root Pastas
Konjac root pasta is made from the konjac plant, which is naturally high in a type of soluble fiber called glucomannan. This fiber is incredibly effective in promoting satiety because it absorbs water and expands in your stomach, helping you feel full for an extended period. A small amount of konjac root pasta can provide a substantial amount of fiber, aiding in digestion and maintaining a healthy gut.
According to Maxim, the "healthiest, low carb, high-fiber pasta is made from konjac root." One whole package is typically no more than "25g of carbs and still the same shape and texture" as wheat-based pasta. This pasta is also "very high in fiber," which Maxim notes "actually aids in weight loss."
3. Kelp Noodles
Kelp noodles, derived from nutrient-rich seaweed, have gained recognition for their potential benefits in weight loss endeavors. These translucent, low-calorie noodles are naturally gluten-free and contain minimal carbohydrates, making them an ideal alternative to traditional pasta for those seeking to shed extra pounds.
"Despite being low in calories and carbs, kelp noodles are rich in dietary fiber. Fiber promotes satiety, which can reduce overeating and aid in weight management. Kelp is a natural source of iodine, which is essential for thyroid function. A healthy thyroid is crucial for regulating metabolism, and a well-functioning metabolism can contribute to weight loss," Heinz says.
As a result, incorporating kelp noodles into your diet can be a flavorful and nutritious strategy to aid in weight management while still savoring pasta-like dishes.
