Plant-based diets, like veganism and vegetarianism, have become extremely popular within the past few years. About one million people in the nation have turned to a vegan lifestyle, and 79 percent of these people are women!
Going on a vegan diet has its weight loss benefits. Dietitian Reed Mangels says that because this diet has much fewer calories than other meat-filled diets, “because in addition to knocking out the meat, you’re also knocking out high fat dairy products.”
However, going on a vegan diet can backfire and actually make you gain weight if done wrong. Many people who just start a vegan diet don't know how to handle the dietary restrictions, and reach for highly processed foods with tons of additives and preservatives. All of this excess fat in you diet is going to rack up the pounds, making your waistline only get bigger!
So remember, even in a vegan diet you have to watch what you eat! Being careless with your food choices is only going to make your fat loss goal farther away from you. If you decide to go vegan, speak to a nutritionist or dietitian to make a meal plan that fits your body.
