Starbucks fans who prioritize health in their orders may be disheartened to discover that the coffee giant has eliminated a tasty and wholesome item from its menu — plain, fresh yellow bananas. Previously available in the vicinity of the pastry display or cash register, these fruits could be purchased for roughly $1 or $1.50 each. Here’s what we know:

Starbucks Quietly Removed Bananas From Menus

Starbucks has not been forthcoming about the disappearance of this particular item, leaving customers who appreciate the health benefits of bananas out in the cold. A spokesperson from the coffee chain has confirmed that both fresh and frozen bananas were removed from the menu in May 2022, citing that the decision was made after a menu evaluation.

A representative recently told The Takeout that "after evaluating the menu," banans were removed. It's highly likely that the fruit wasn't selling as well as other items, leading to its discontinuation. In a related 2021 Reddit thread, one self-proclaimed Starbucks employee wrote that the location they worked at would "get 24 [bananas brought in to the store], sell 1 or 2, then throw out the rest when they get gross, and then repeat."

Despite the fact that the news went largely unnoticed by Starbucks' clientele, a few patrons expressed their displeasure upon learning about it, as reported by Eat This, Not That. "Nooo I always loved the green tea frap plus banana it's so much better," one user on Reddit recently wrote as another added: "my store doesn't even have them now."

Upon closer inspection, it can be observed that Starbucks' website does not list bananas among its products. Nevertheless, alternatives that feature bananas can be found within the "Sweets & Snacks" section, such as the Peter Rabbit Organics Strawberry Banana.

Packaged in a pouch adorned with an endearing bunny illustration, this option diverges from the concept of a fresh banana and instead comprises "USDA organic banana-strawberry puree with a hint of lemon juice." With 80 calories, 17 grams of sugar, and no fat, the item is contained in a "convenient, squeezable, resealable" packaging.
