If you’ve ever used an app like Google Maps or Facebook, only to find your iPhone has lost half its battery power by the end of it all, it’s not your imagination. Some apps are truly draining on your battery and can leave you scrambling for a charger. The reason for this is because these apps tend to be resource-intensive — think about how much work a navigation app has to do for you, for example. Or consider the number of features Facebook provides and how it must consistently update itself to bring you the latest posts.

Deleting the apps in question will always be the most helpful option. But it’s not the only option.

There are ways to prevent your apps from draining battery from your iPhone, once and for all. Here are some of the top tips that can help.

Disable Background App Refresh

Go to Settings and scroll down to General. Now head to Background App Refresh. Here you’ll see a list of apps that are enabled to use battery so that they continually refresh. There may be some apps that you feel need to be updated constantly, but there’s a good chance too many of them are enabled and they aren’t worth the battery drain.

Disable the apps individually to keep them from refreshing. You can also disable all of them at once.

Your iPhone battery's sweet spot is between 30 and 80 percent charged, which means it is most helpful to give it mini charging sessions throughout the day in order to keep it safely in that zone. Avoid exposing your device to extreme temperatures (heat truly is death to a phone battery) and try to keep tabs on the apps that seem to be doing a number on your apps. Try disabling Background App Refresh for these apps. If all else fails, see if it's possible to delete these apps and use them in your browser instead to save battery power.
