When you think of dehydrating foods that can cause wrinkles and fine lines, what comes to mind? Alcohol, maybe — or salty chips? While it’s true that these foods aren’t great for skin and can cost you much-needed moisture, don’t sleep on the fact that high-sugar foods can also be dehydrating. And sugar has another wrinkle-causing effect: it can deplete collagen

“When it comes to collagen and sugar, it’s a less-than-ideal relationship,” says Certified Nutritionist and Certified Functional Food Professional Amy Fox. “Added sugar has a detrimental effect on collagen due to a process called glycation. Consuming excessive amounts of sugar attaches itself to collagen fibers, causing them to deteriorate and lose their elasticity. The result? The appearance of wrinkles, sagging skin, and brittle nails.”

If you want to prevent wrinkles, avoiding sugar foods — including two that may shock you — is a smart idea. Fox lets us in on two foods you may not have on your radar.

Smoothies

Say it isn’t so — smoothies may seem super healthy, but they can actually be a source of tons of hidden sugar.

“Surprisingly, fruit-flavored smoothies can be a sneaky source of hidden sugars that can damage collagen production,” Fox says. “While fruit itself is generally considered healthy, packaged or store-bought smoothies often contain added sugars and syrups to enhance the flavor. For example, a popular strawberry banana smoothie contains a staggering amount of added sugar — up to 44 grams per 16-ounce serving.”

These seemingly innocent and nutritious beverages can contribute to collagen breakdown, Fox adds. “So, it's essential to be mindful of smoothies' ingredients and sugar content, even those marketed as healthy options,” she says.

Granola Bars

If you’re the type who grabs a granola bar in the morning and flies out that door thinking you’re taking care of your nutritional needs, you could actually be adding a ton more sugar to your diet than you realize.

“Some seemingly innocent and health-conscious granola bars can be loaded with hidden sugars that can sabotage collagen production,” Fox says. “A typical chocolate chip granola bar can contain more than 18 grams of added sugar per bar. These on-the-go snacks often contain added sugars, syrups, and sweeteners to enhance their taste.”

Despite their wholesome reputation, certain granola bars can harbor a surprising amount of sugar, leading to collagen degradation, Fox says, adding that it's a good idea to check the nutrition labels and choose granola bars with minimal added sugars or opt for homemade versions to maintain healthy collagen levels.

Why is collagen important?

The entire reason to avoid sugar has to do with maintaining healthy collagen levels. But have you ever wondered why collagen is essential for maintaining youthful and vibrant skin? “Collagen is a key protein that is the building block for our skin, hair, nails, and connective tissues,” Fox says. “It provides strength and structure, giving our skin a firm, plump appearance while keeping wrinkles at bay.”

The next time you’re craving something sweet, opt for fruit instead of smoothies or dark chocolate instead of a chocolate-chip granola bar.
