Prince Andrew is making headlines for even more reasons this week, as some comments he made about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle – in particular, their royal wedding – have just resurfaced. The controversial comments were made by the Duke of York on This Morning before his daughter Princess Eugenie’s wedding to Jack Brooksbank on October 12th, 2018.
If you’ll recall, Prince Andrew and Sarah, Duchess of York’s youngest daughter’s wedding took place just five months after Harry and Meghan tied the knot on May 19th, 2018, and the service also took place at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle. However, Prince Andrew wanted the world to know that his daughter’s wedding would be a lot different to his nephew’s, seemingly hinting that Harry and Meghan’s was inferior in comparison. Especially in reference to the number of guests that were invited to the ceremonies! Yikes!
"It will NOT be the same as the previous one that was held in May. This is not a public wedding, this is meant to be a family wedding," Prince Andrew said at the time, referring to the 850 guests invited to his daughter's wedding, compared to the 600 that were on Harry and Meghan's guest list.
Viewers were quick to observe that he seemed to hint that his daughter had more friends than the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, therefore seemingly justifying the bigger number of guests in attendance.
"There'll be a few more people than most people have," he continued. "There are a few more than Harry had, but that's just the nature of Eugenie and Jack – they've got so many friends that they need a church of that size to fit them all in."
At the time, viewers took to social media to comment about Prince Andrew's remarks, with one Twitter user saying that they felt he was "throwing shade all over the place." "So seems like a competition for him," another observed, while others said, "Throwing some shade there Duke," and "Hum! So Harry have (sic) not got so many friends."
