Prince Harry is reportedly looking into purchasing a house in the UK despite his wife, Meghan Markle, not being on board. A source told The Mirror that the ex-royals have no interest in “a property on the royal estate” and will be house-hunting independent of the royal properties, despite the push for a new home being to ease existing tensions with the royal family.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle left their royal duties behind in March of 2020 and moved to California. Since then, they’ve caused a ruckus in the media by bashing the royal family. Between their 2021 Oprah interview, their 2022 Netflix docuseries, and Harry’s 2023 memoir Spare, they’ve painted the royal family in a bad light for the past three years, and as a result, tensions are high.
Prince Harry is reportedly buying a UK home
A source reported that "Harry is very much leading" the search for a new home in London. "Making use of a small apartment in Kensington Palace from time to time isn't out of the question," the source continued, "but when it comes to a home in the UK, they will purchase that themselves."
This report is surprising, given that Harry and Meghan were gifted Frogmore Cottage by the late Queen Elizabeth as a wedding present, but chose to leave the home behind (and repay 2.4M pounds worth of renovations that were done according to their specifications) for a new home in Montecito, California.
Royal expert Duncan Larcombe says, "If they don't have a home [in the UK], Harry's children will grow up not knowing their cousins, uncles, or aunts, or any of their family. They're growing up fast and [King Charles] isn't getting any younger."
Of course, to get to know their family, Archie and Lilibet's parents would have to reconcile with the rest of the royal family, and according to royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams, "it could certainly take years for a reconciliation to happen between Prince Harry and the royal family."
Fan reactions
In a YouTube video posted by TalkTV explaining the issue, fans took to the comment section to share their thoughts. "Just because Harry wants to come back doesn't mean the Royal family will welcome him," one user posted.
"The only reason Harry wants a British address in his name is for tax reasons," speculated another user.
"The only reason Harry wants to buy somewhere in the UK is because he wants to remain Counsellor of State for the UK," another suggested.
"No, no, no!" a fourth user exclaimed. "Traitors should never be allowed to return!"
We'll have to keep an eye out to see what develops in the house-hunting spectacle of Harry and Meghan.
