In the wake of recent events and racial tension across the U.S., Megan Markle and Prince Harry are shifting their focus. The couple is passionate about the Black Lives Matter movement and is using their influence to make a difference.
Since moving to L.A., Meghan and Harry have been focused on how they can help during the coronavirus pandemic. As the Black Lives Matter movement continues to gain momentum, they are shifting their focus away from COVID to racial equality and ending police brutality.
Markle gave a passionate speech to her alma mater about police brutality after days of unrest following the murder of George Floyd. Markle shared powerful words with the 2020 graduating class of Immaculate Heart High School. "George Floyd's life mattered, and Breonna Taylor's life mattered, and Philando Castile's life mattered, and Tamir Rice's life mattered, and so did so many other people whose names we know and whose names we don't know,” said Markle in her speech.
During her speech, the Duchess of Sussex admitted that she was afraid of addressing the recent events. "For the past couple of weeks, I've been planning on saying a few words to you for your graduation, and as we all have seen over the past few weeks, what is happening in our country and in our state and in our hometown of L.A. has been absolutely devastating," she told students. "And I wasn't sure what I could say to you. I wanted to say the right thing. And I was really nervous that I wouldn't or that it would get picked apart, and I realized, the only wrong thing to say is to say nothing."
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are currently working with community leaders from a number of different organizations and charities in support of black lives matter. No details are known at the moment.
