Prince Harry Lost Remaining Royal Duties After Stepping Down As A Working Royal And Declaring The US As His Permanent Residence
The Duke of Sussex, 39, may have been hoping for a dual residency, but that was made nearly impossible after King Charles evicted him and Meghan from their official U.K. residence, Frogmore Cottage, last year. And the father-of-two officially declaring his permanent residence as the U.S. last year has ended his remaining royal duties.
According to The Mirror, a filing from Prince Harry's eco-travel company Travalyst, which was founded in 2020, showed that his primary residence is in the U.S., which reportedly hugely affects whether he is called upon in emergencies. His residence was reportedly altered on June 29th, 2023, and reads: "New country/State Usually Resident: United States."
We already know that Prince Harry and Meghan are not likely to be called upon in emergencies, as King Charles' younger brother Prince Edward and his wife Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, filled in for him at an event earlier this month.
"There are more profound implications of the change of main residence," royal expert Tom Quinn explained to The Mirror. "Because he is a prince of the royal blood and still fifth in line to the throne, Harry is, in theory, still a counsellor of state, charged with carrying out the official duties of the monarch should King Charles become incapacitated."
"For Harry that is now impossible," Quinn continued, in reference to him stepping in for his father. "The change of residency comes on top of a statement in 2022 from the crown to Parliament that only working members of the royal family will ever be called upon to fill in for the monarch. So that leaves Harry out in the cold where he thinks he wants to be – for now." Quinn added: "With his change of primary residence Harry is saying: 'If Britain doesn't want me, then I don't want Britain.'"
For what it's worth, Prince Harry would have been an official Counsellor of State due to him being fifth in line to the throne; however, he and Prince Andrew were quietly removed by King Charles shortly after his accession due to a sneaky change in the Counsellors of State bill. The updated bill essentially stated that only official working members of the royal family could step in for King Charles, if needed, which Prince Harry and his disgraced uncle are not.
