Although Prince Harry doesn’t seem to have a bad word to say about his beloved grandmother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, a royal author believes that their relationship was “quite badly damaged by” his attitude when he married Meghan Markle in 2018, and further damaged by their infamous Oprah Winfrey interview in 2021.

According to Ingrid Seward’s new book, My Mother And I, which is released on February 15th, Prince Harry’s “high-handed attitude” at the time of his royal wedding left the late queen “dismayed.”

While the book doesn’t go into specifics, it could likely be referring to an alleged disagreement with the Queen’s dresser Angela Kelly over Meghan’s wedding tiara, which they had reportedly requested access to ahead of time for a wedding hair trial. Prince Harry also touched on this in his bombshell memoir Spare, released in January 2023, writing: “Her eyes were fire. She started having a go at me. ‘Angela, you really want to do this now? Really? Now?’ She fixed me with a look that made me shiver. I could read in her face a clear warning. This isn’t over.”

The Queen Was Reportedly 'Dismayed' By Prince Harry's Attitude

In her latest book, Seward writes that according to Lady Elizabeth Anson, the late Queen's cousin and confidante, "the Queen was dismayed by Harry's high-handed attitude both before and after the wedding, and their relationship was 'quite badly damaged by it all.'"

And it only got worse when Prince Harry, 39, and Meghan, 42, announced that they would be stepping down as senior royals in 2020. "It [the relationship] was even more damaged when Harry decided to give up being a working royal and leave the country – a decision, said Lady Elizabeth, that the Queen never truly understood," Seward wrote, before going on to mention the damage done by the infamous Oprah interview, which aired in March 2021.

The Queen 'Couldn't Condone' The Way Prince Harry Spoke About The Royal Family In Oprah Interview

"Then came the couple's infamous interview with Oprah Winfrey, in which Harry said his father was 'trapped' and heavily implied that the Royal Family were racist," Seward wrote. "The Queen was upset by his attitude, said Lady Elizabeth. However much she loved Harry – and she did – she couldn't condone the way he was speaking about the institution of the monarchy she'd spent 70 years preserving."

"At that point the Queen decided there was no longer any point in worrying about Harry as he wasn't going to take notice of anyone but his wife," Seward added, although she did mention in her book that Meghan had the Queen's approval from the moment they first met. "From their very first meeting, over tea at Buckingham Palace, the Queen approved of Meghan Markle," Seward wrote.

The Queen's Issues With Meghan Markle's Wedding Dress

While the Queen reportedly "approved" of Meghan right away, she wasn't a huge fan of the former Suits actress's Clare Waight Keller for Givenchy wedding dress; more specifically, the color. She reportedly thought that the dress was too white for a second wedding, as Meghan was married to American film producer Trevor Engelson between 2011 and 2014.

"In the monarch's view, it was not appropriate for a divorcee getting remarried in church to look quite so flamboyantly virginal," Seward wrote.
