Later that week, a royal insider said that the Duke would be staying at the hospital a little longer than originally planned: "Following consultation with his doctor the Duke of Edinburgh is likely to remain in hospital for observation and rest over the weekend and into next week."

However, the Duke reportedly remains in "good spirits," and is simply staying at the hospital out of an "abundance" of caution.

A follow-up statement from Buckingham Palace further explained his extended stay, "The Duke of Edinburgh remains at King Edward VII's Hospital where he is receiving medical attention for an infection.
