There are certain parts about Prince William and Kate Middleton‘s love story that we feel we have known for a very long time. They met at the University of St Andrews, became friends, and started dating after Prince William saw her strutting her stuff in a sheer dress on the catwalk.

We also know that they broke up for a brief period before getting back together and ultimately getting engaged, married, and having three beautiful children. However, we didn’t know *how* Prince William had broken up with his then girlfriend… until now!

Prince William Reportedly Broke Up With Kate Middleton In 2007 Via Phone Call After Cancelling Their NYE Plans

According to Robert Jobson's new book Catherine, the Princess of Wales, Prince William, now 42, broke up with Kate, also 42, over the phone back in 2007. Say it ain't so!

The boyfriend and girlfriend were getting quite serious in 2006, with the brunette beauty even receiving an invitation to William's military graduation in December 2006. However, something also happened in December 2006 that she wasn't prepared for – and that was having her New Year's Eve plans with her boyfriend cancelled. Kate knew "something was wrong" when that happened, Jobson wrote. And it seems like her instinct was right, as she was broken up with via phone call just a few months later.

“Catherine knew William wasn't in any hurry to propose, and the truth is she was prepared to wait until he was ready. After all, they were in love – weren't they?" the King Charles III: Our King: The Man and the Monarch author wrote, before going into more detail about the "devastating" phone call.

According to the book, Prince William explained to his then girlfriend that they both needed "a bit of space" to "find our own way," and therefore couldn't promise a proposal. "In an emotionally charged 30-minute conversation, they both acknowledged they were on 'different' pages. It was a devastating blow to Catherine, who felt doubly let down at being dumped over the phone."

Let's not forget that Kate handled the break-up like a true pro by putting on a brave face and essentially making it seem like she was doing great on her own, even if behind-the-scenes it was a different story. Jobson confirmed that Kate "resolved to hide her pain from the outside world" despite being "distraught" about the break-up.

Prince William Soon Had 'Second Thoughts'

Seeing his ex-girlfriend in the tabloids letting her hair down and looking utterly fabulous seemed to have done the trick, as Prince William reportedly had "second thoughts" and wanted to get back together later that same year.

They reportedly got back together at a 'Freakin' Naughty' themed costume party thrown by jockey Sam Waley-Cohen. "She'd arrived dressed as a nurse, and William had made a beeline for her," Jobson explained, in relation to the party. "They then spent the first part of the evening deep in conversation before hitting the dance floor, where they ended up kissing." After getting back together that night, they got engaged just three years later! The rest, as they say, is history!
