It’s been reported several times that Prince William and Prince Harry‘s ongoing feud would have broken the late Princess Diana’s heart. And a royal expert has claimed that she would have wanted her sons to put their differences aside and put on a united front for an appearance at the Diana Legacy Award ceremony, which took place on Thursday, March 14th at the Science Museum in London.

That didn’t actually happen, of course, as they both made very separate appearances at the event. Prince William, 41, appeared in person to give a speech and hand out awards. Once Prince William had finished his part, Prince Harry, 39, then appeared via video link from his home in Montecito, California and thanked the winners for “protecting” his late mother’s legacy.

Prince William And Prince Harry Appear Separately At Diana Legacy Award Ceremony

“Every single day when you’re working on these things, you don’t even know the impact that it’s making,” Prince Harry said on the video. “You don’t know when you meet people, and you have those interactions, you may have potentially changed their day, change their outlook, changed their perspective, give them a little bit more hope, and hopefully, inspired them to go off and do something similar.”

He added: “I am seriously impressed with the work that you do, especially at the young age that you’re at, the future is yours, right, and you’re helping to shape that future.”

According to The Express, royal writer Richard Eden said the Prince of Wales "drew the line at actually appearing with his brother" at the ceremony, adding, "who could blame him?"

Speaking on Palace Confidential, Eden said that the brothers would have both wanted to play a part in the ceremony in honor of their mother. "It's an organization they are both involved in, obviously very important, it's trying to continue the legacy of their mother, so it's something they care about a lot," he explained.

Ingrid Seward, royal biographer and editor-in-chief of Majesty Magazine, told The Mirror ahead of the ceremony: "It is carefully timed so they don't have the embarrassment of even having to acknowledge each other. Yet they are both honoring the award and their mother’s continuing legacy. The timing confirms their continued animosity. William has no wish to confront his brother on a video screen. It would take the attention away from the point of the evening. It probably will anyway; such is the interest in their continuing rift."

Royal Biographer Says Princess Diana Would Have 'Insisted' Her Sons Put Their Differences Aside

Seward also told The Mirror that she thinks the late Princess Diana would have insisted William and Harry end their feud once and for all – while suggesting that the feud may never have gotten this bad had she still been alive.

"It is not a situation Diana would have liked. She would have put all her considerable energy into preventing their brotherly feud from reaching this stage of animosity and becoming more difficult to mend the longer it went on," Seward speculated. "And if she failed, I think she would have insisted that they came together however briefly by speaking over the video link in order to celebrate the winners of the prize organized in her name."

"She would understand that once again it will be the animosity between the brothers that grabs the media's attention rather than the celebrated young winners," Seward continued, adding: "Someday Wills and Harry are going to have to confront one another. What a perfect opportunity this would have been to speak about their mother secure in the knowledge that they were 5,000 miles apart."
