A Pro MUA Shares The Mascara Hack That Is 'Better Than A Lash Lift' For Older Women: 'So Simple And Effective'

Mascara often acts as the final, crucial layer that complements eye-popping eyeliner and shaded eyeshadow. Though this enhancing and volumizing tool can indeed craft a more youthful appearance, there are also common mistakes that might lead to the opposite outcome.

To avoid this and to create the perfect lift for mature beauties over 40, beauty expert and popular content creator Gabriela Soares recently shared a tutorial showing viewers how to get a curled lash look that is “better than a lash lift” and that opens your eyes without highlighting fine lines and wrinkles.

Pro MUA Tip: Try Curling Your Lashes After Applying Mascara For An Instant Boost

In her September 16th upload, Soares gave a “little trick” for anyone who has “really straight lashes.” While many of us “actually curl our lashes before applying mascara,” what can happen is that the “weight of the mascara will make the lashes drop again,” Soares acknowledged regarding a common makeup issue over 40.

Instead, she suggested strategically curling your lashes after applying mascara. "Then, when your mascara is 100% dry, you can put another squeeze in the curler and it will lift them up," she noted. The creator then gave viewers a better look at her voluminous, curled and elegant lashes. "See that? I curled after mascara and see how much more lifted my eye is now?" she said.

Additional Suggestion: Skip Using Older or Expired Mascara

In addition, we also caught up with professional makeup artist Alyssia Chang, founder of Prevail Beauty, for more mascara tips for mature beauties. The easiest way to get an undesired clumpy look, Chang says, is to use a product that is older or expired. "Mascara formulas are constantly being updated and improved, so if you’re still using the same mascara you’ve been using for years, it’s time to switch things up," Chang advises.

"Newer mascaras often have better staying power and can give your lashes a fuller, more voluminous look," she says. When it comes to purchasing new makeup products, many experts suggest reassessing your eye makeup every 3-6 months and replacing it if it begins to clump or gives a flatter or less voluminous effect when applied.

MUAs Also Love Heating Their Eyelash Curlers

Eyelash curlers are mascara's best friend when it comes to sky-high lashes, Chang said. Failing to use this tool before applying your mascara can lead to that droopy look you're aiming to avoid. "Many women make the mistake of not curling their lashes before applying mascara," Chang explains.

The Bottom Line

This, she says, can "give your lashes a droopy, downward-facing appearance that can make you look tired and aged." She suggests "curling your lashes with an eyelash curler before applying mascara to help give them a more lifted look."
