Queen Elizabeth has finally spoken out about her late husband, Prince Philip, who passed away back in April at the age of 99. While staying private about her feelings towards the passing of her husband of more than 70 years over the last several months of grieving, the 95-year-old royal revealed in her address to the Scottish Parliament on Saturday a brief glimpse into the love they shared.
For the sixth session of Scottish Parliament, the Queen opened with a speech, saying, "I have spoken before of my deep and abiding affection for this wonderful country, and of the many happy memories Prince Philip and I always held of our time here."
Queen Elizabeth then continued, "It is often said that it is the people that make a place, and there are few places where this is truer than in Scotland, as we have seen in recent times." It was not rare for the couple to spend their summers at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, and this was the first time the Queen had made remarks to the Scottish Parliament without being joined by the Duke of Edinburgh at her side.
The speech evidently evoked strong emotions from onlookers, as Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland’s first minister shared her "deep sympathy and shared sorrow" over the passing of Prince Philip. Sturgeon also thanked the Queen for being a "steadfast friend" throughout the years, addressing the close relationship the monarch had developed with Scottish Parliament.
Queen Elizabeth was the picture of style for the address, donning a long, green wool coat adorned with gold buttons. She also wore a matching green hat and a pair of patent leather loafers to tie together the sophisticated look. After celebrating her late husband’s life on what would have been his 100th birthday in June, this was the first time that the Queen has publicly addressed Prince Philip and their relationship since his passing.
