Red seems to be the ‘it’ hair color this fall— with everyone from Cara Delevingne to Shay Mitchell to Cardi B all recently swapping their signature hues for an auburn look. These “pumpkin-spice-inspired” tresses, as dubbed by Popsugar, are all the rage, seen on celebrities with various hair textures, and they also flatter many skin tones.

With that said, we checked in with professional hair stylists and hair experts to learn more about the trendy reddish-brown hue, and how to find a red hair dye that works with your own skin tone and undertones. Read on for tips, suggestions and insight from Ghanima Abdullah, cosmetologist and hair expert at The Right Hairstyles and Jamie Mazzei, creative director for NuBest Salon & Spa.

Finding the Right Shade of Red for Your Skin Tone

As seen on Delevingne at Paris Fashion Week, the right shade of red for your tresses will highlight your complexion and flatter your facial features. Mazzei urges that “every skin tone can wear red,” and that this fall 2022 trend may be more versatile than you think.

“Reddish-brown is a staple for fall,” he says, “it allows us to enjoy the red trend without lightening our hair beyond brown and possibly causing damage.” Abdullah agrees, and adds, “I am a fan of red hair in the fall. This hair color stands out so nicely when there are multiple colored leaves around, it really draws a lot of attention.”

When analyzing your own tones and undertones, Mazzei explains that “for warmer skin tones, a red with orange undertones is most complementary.” For cooler skin, he suggests that “a red with blue undertones works well,” and “for paler skin tones, consider a lighter red or a strawberry blonde.”

Preventing Red Dye from Fading with Henna

When going red, Mazzei urges that it is “very important to have the right at-home maintenance, as “fading is the number one problem with hair color.” Abdullah seconds this, and recommends using henna dye as one way to keep your newly dyed red locks looking vibrant for much longer.

“There is a red dye you can choose that works for all skin colors and hair types, it’s henna,” she says. Henna, Abdullah notes, is a “semi-permanent dye that blends with your existing hair color, so it’s still you, just more red.” In addition, she also deems it to be a “really good hair conditioner,” which can prevent your hair from becoming damaged with box dye.

Henna is going to make your natural hair color “orangish red, if your hair is light,” Abdullah says, and “if your hair color is medium, your hair should turn a dark red.” If your hair is dark, she says that “you’ll have dark red highlights.” Henna is “fine for using over other coloring treatments,” Abdullah concludes, as “it will blend with your color the way it blends with your natural hair color.” It fades in “three to four weeks,” which is still a long enough period to determine if this fall 2022’s trendy hair hue is right for you.
