Reese Witherspoon is a force to be reckoned with and she shows no signs of slowing down. The “Little Fires Everywhere” producer and star has certainly been busy as of late, but she still takes time to remember and reflect on her early days in Hollywood and how the landscape of the world of fame is ever-changing.
The 44-year-old actress stepped onto the acting scene in the early ‘90s and she sure has grown from the experiences life has thrown at her, both good and bad.
The mom-of-three wasn’t afraid to get personal in a recent interview for the April 2020 issue of Vanity Fair— and she didn’t hold back. Witherspoon explained how difficult it was to be a young female growing up in the limelight.
“Bad things happened to me. I was assaulted, harassed. It wasn’t isolated,” Witherspoon said. “I recently had a journalist ask me about it. She said, Well, why didn’t you speak up sooner? And I thought, that’s so interesting to talk to someone who experienced those things and then judge them for the way they decide to speak about them. You tell your story in your own time when you’re ready.”
In 2017, Witherspoon revealed her own personal experience with sexual assault and years later, she still stresses the importance of continuing the conversation of her own experience and other women’s experiences thanks to the Me Too movement.
The actress-turned-producer has been no stranger to advocating for women’s rights and for equal pay for equal work that women deserve for their work in both film and television. Standing up for herself has helped to change the way other women in Hollywood are treated as well.
“An actress came up to me at a party and said, ‘Do you know what you’ve done?’ I had no idea what she was talking about,” Witherspoon said during the Vanity Fair interview. “The day after the HBO equal pay thing went through, they called her agent to rewrite her contract. She was then paid twice as much as she had been.” How amazing is that?!
Witherspoon continues to be a force both in front and behind the camera, and we can’t wait to see what’s next for her in the big world of Hollywood.
