February 27, 2022 by Marissa Matozzo
Millions of viewers love tuning in to Good Morning America every day, largely thanks to the riveting presence and warm energy brought by anchor Robin Roberts, 61, the beloved broadcaster. Ever since they began their romance in 2005, Roberts’ fans have loved seeing her in a happy and loving relationship with her partner, massage therapist Amber Laign. Roberts frequently documents her personal life on her Instagram, from cute videos of the couple’s dog Lukas to shoutouts and words of wisdom.
Her fans are left heartbroken after Roberts shared a video on February 24th telling her followers that Laign has been diagnosed with breast cancer. “Good morning everyone,” she said in the video, “my sweet Amber wanted me to tell you something she’s been facing.” Roberts continued, “At the end of last year, Amber was diagnosed with breast cancer […] She had surgery last month and this morning will begin chemotherapy. Thankfully, the prognosis is good.”
The iconic journalist then thanked her and Laign’s shared loved ones and those close to them for keeping the news private until Laign felt ready to tell the world. “She and I have been together almost 17 years and have helped each other through our challenges like my journey with cancer. It’s my turn now to be there for her like she was for me,” Roberts added. She then explained why this means her time at GMA will lessen in the near future; “And that means I’ll be away from GMA from time to time like this morning as she starts chemo,” she said.
Roberts then turned to her many fans and supporters, acknowledging especially those who might relate to the battle that she went through and that Align now is facing. “We know many, many are facing cancer and other challenges — like my mama said, ‘Everybody’s got something.’ Please know that you are in our prayers and hopefully we’re in yours, too,” Roberts concluded.
Roberts, as many remember, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007 and then with a rare blood and bone marrow disease called myelodysplastic syndrome in 2012, when a bone marrow transplant was necessary for her survival. Roberts also recently recovered from COVID-19, proving what we already know, that her strength is unparalleled and openness with the world shows the power in vulnerability. Thousands of fans continue to add comments to her recent post, sending love and prayers Laign’s way.
