Roger Federer will not be participating in the US Open this year. The Swiss tennis player has decided to withdraw from the upcoming tournament – as well as several others – while he focuses on his health.

Federer shared a video message with his fans, explaining that he is having trouble with his knee, which will keep him out of tennis competitions for several months. He will even have to undergo surgery soon.

Speaking on his own Instagram account, the athlete told fans, “Hey everybody, it’s Roger here. Hope you are doing well. Listen I just wanted to update you, or give you a bit of an update on what’s been going on since Wimbledon. As you can imagine, it’s not been simple.”

Federer continued, "I've been doing a lot of checks with doctors as well on my knee. I'll be on crutches for many weeks and then also out of the game for many months so it's going to be difficult of course in some ways, but at the same time, I know it's the right thing to do because I want to be healthy, I want to be running around later as well again."

The athlete already had two surgeries on his right knee, both taking place last year. He chose to withdraw from the 2020 season last June, and made his return to his career in March 2021.

Federer has not participated in a tennis competition since Wimbledon in July, as he withdrew from competing in the French Open and the Tokyo Olympics this year. However, e still plans to return to his tennis career once his knee has recovered.

He told his fans, "I want to give myself a glimmer of hope to return to the tour in some shape or form. I am realistic, don't get me wrong. I know how difficult it is at this age right now to do another surgery and try it."
