Roses are emblematic of spring, and one of the most stunning 2023 hair trends this season is the ‘rose bun,’ as seen on celebs like Bella Hadid, models at Jason Wu’s fall 2023 Christian Siriano show and TikTokers. We reached out to professional hair stylists and experts to learn more about the trend, and how rocking it yourself can provide a sleek way to hide hair thinning, hair loss or bald patches. Read on for tips, suggestions and insight from John Belt, hair expert and owner of Belt Salon and Ghanima Abdullah, cosmetologist and hair expert at The Right Hairstyles.

What Is The Rose Bun And Why Is It So Popular?

The updo style commonly known as the rose bun, as its name suggests, resembles the flower with one’s long hair pinned up at the back of their head in a coiled look. The style was dreamed up by hair stylist Lacy Redway, who spoke to Allure about revamping a traditional slicked-back ballerina bun into something more. “Just like flowers, each bun should take its own personalized form,” she explained.

Belt tells us that he believes the rose bun trend is popular on social media and in high fashion because “it is a unique and creative way to style hair, and it can be done with various hair lengths and textures.” He adds, “as a hair stylist, I appreciate how versatile and customizable the style can be to suit each individual’s preferences.”

How Can This Style Hide Thinning And Gray Hair?

While one pro of the style is its beauty, elegance and timelessness, another positive aspect, Belt says, is its ability to conceal thinning hair (or draw attention away from it). By slicking your hair back, you can experiment with this step to find where to pin it to best hide bald patches or areas you’d like to cover up.

“The rose bun style could potentially help hide hair loss or thinning hair as the coils can create volume and texture around the bun,” Belt points out. Abdullah notes that if you want to show less gray hairs, this style can help you accomplish that goal as well. “If your grays come out randomly in the top of your head, making this high bun or topknot can help conceal them,” she says. “Play around with what looks nice on you,” Abdullah advises.

How To Create A Rose Bun: 9 Steps

To create a rose bun, Belt notes that you may need bobby pins, hair ties and hairspray. “Depending on the individual’s hair type and texture, you may also need a comb or brush to smooth the hair before creating the bun,” he recommends. Belt adds that it’s “important to choose products that are suitable for your hair type and texture.” Generally, he provides the following nine steps to replicate the floral style:

1. Brush your hair to remove any tangles.

2. Tie your hair up in a ponytail at the back of your head.

3. Divide the ponytail into two different sections.

4. Twist one of the ponytail sections and wrap it around the base to create a coil.

5. Pin the end of the coil to the base of the ponytail with bobby pins.

6. Repeat the twisting and coiling process with the other section of the ponytail, wrapping it around the first coil you created.

7. Pin the second coil in place with bobby pins.

8. Adjust the coils to create the desired rose-like shape.

9. Secure the bun with bobby pins and hairspray if necessary. Voila!
