Prince William pulled out of attending a memorial service for his godfather, the late King Constantine of Greece, at the last minute on Tuesday, February 27th, with Kensington Palace stating it was due to a “personal matter.”
The late Constantine II was the last King of Greece, reigning from March 6th 1964 until the abolition of the Greek monarchy on June 1st 1973. The Prince of Wales, 41, was due to attend the service at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle, and was also expected to do a reading, according to the order of service. According to People, he let the Greek royal family know that he couldn’t attend via phone call.
Prince William Suddenly Pulls Out Of King Constantine Of Greece Memorial
Although Prince William was unable to attend, the royal family was represented by Queen Camilla, as well as King Charles' sister, Princess Anne, her husband Sir Timothy Laurence, their daughter Zara Tindall, and her husband Mike Tindall.
Prince Andrew and his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson were also in attendance, as was their eldest daughter Princess Beatrice and her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi.
Prince William's last-minute absence has understandably left fans worried about the health status of King Charles, 75, and Kate Middleton, 43. However, People reported that the King's health status is not expected to be the reason for Prince William's absence, which we think we believe since Queen Camilla, 76, attended the service.
Although the palace didn't state that Prince William's absence had anything to do with his wife's recovery from abdominal surgery, which she had last month, People reported that the palace confirmed that the Princess of Wales "continues to be doing well" with her recovery. That hasn't stopped some royal fans from worrying about the Princess of Wales, though...
Fan Comments
As Kensington Palace didn't go into further detail about the real reason for Prince William's absence, social media was full of comments, both speculative and supportive. "Wonder what the 'personal matter' could be," commented one fan on an E! News Instagram post. "I wonder what's going on over there? Neither William or King Charles attended. I think Charles' health is worse than we know," speculated another.
Many others seemed to understand why the Prince of Wales couldn't attend, with one writing: "He is taking on so much suddenly. His father's illness, wife's health, 3 kids, having to step up and dealing with Harry's constant lies. He deserves to take care of himself when he can." Another added: "Given what he is going through and the amount of stress, he will need to put his well-being and family first. This is the perfect example of using delegation and your team to step up and help with duties." A third supportive fan added: "Taking care of the wife post-surgery, please give them a break, they are humans ok, allow them to heal period."
On a Talk TV YouTube video about Prince William's absence, one fan said: "Prince William comes across as a reliable person so it's unlikely he made the decision lightly. If the RF asks for privacy, we should respect it." "A personal matter could be one of the kids. With Catherine out of commission, Prince William probably has to handle everything. His family is his top priority," wrote another.
"Oh my goodness! I hope the princess Kate is fine," wrote one worried fan, followed by the crying, praying, flowers, and red heart emojis." Prayers for William, Kate and their children. They are human like me and you," commented another. "I wish Kate the best and really hope she's okay, but something ain't right. Her condition seems to be dire," commented another fan, followed by a crying emoji. "Praying for her and her children especially," they added.
