Your iPhone hasn’t been working as well as it normally does. It stalls, apps crash, and you really wish there was something you could do to fix some of these issues (short of buying a new phone or even spending money on a new battery). There are a few tricks that tech experts rely on that might help boost your phone’s functionalities, including how you close apps and other steps you can take to speed up your device. Here are three simple rules for closing apps that will make your iPhone run so much faster.

Close all non-useful or not essential apps

The easiest thing you can do that will take just seconds is to close all non-useful or non-essential apps, says Michael Jan Baldicana, technical content and SEO specialist with Dream Chasers. “ It will take a lot of memory and will also drain the battery,” Baldicana says. “In that way, you will save battery capacity and to lessen the phone’s memory. It may clear or improve your RAM and make the phone faster.”

Don’t just close apps

Closing apps isn’t going to always be enough to get your phone working better. “Sometimes closing the apps will not make the iPhone run faster,” Baldicana says. “If you experience closing the app and it is still slow, you might need to restart the phone. Restart the phone once in a while.”

Understand the limitations

“Honestly, closing running apps in the background does not make your iPhone device faster,” Baldicana reveals. “You should update your system, know and boost your memory, and install a memory saver app.”

So though there are steps you can take before you visit an Apple store or buy a new phone battery — like closing apps and restarting your device — there limitations to just how much sway these things have over your phone’s speed.
