Dry lips are a common problem during the colder months, but that does not make them any less uncomfortable. Unfortunately, some of the things you might think of as solutions for this problem could actually make it worse.
For example, although you might be tempted to lather on more and more chapstick to compensate for chapped lips, you have to be wary of certain ingredients that are common in lip balms that could irritate your skin even more. Keep reading for more details.

Salicylic acid
Salicylic acid is one ingredient that you should keep an eye out for in your chapsticks and lip balms.
Dr. Y Claire Chang, board-certified cosmetic dermatologist at Union Square Laser Dermatology, explained to HuffPost, "I recommend avoiding excessive use of lip balms with salicylic acid, which is an exfoliant that removes dead skin cells."
"Too frequent use of salicylic acid can cause irritation and further dry out the lips," Chang continued.

Menthol
Other ingredients, like menthol and peppermint, can also be a problem for your chapped lips.
Dr. Joshua Zeichner, a board-certified dermatologist based in New York City, told Well + Good, "Menthol can lead to irritation of the skin with disruption of the skin barrier, as well as inflammation."

Zeichner adds, "In the end this can lead to more dryness, creating a vicious cycle where you feel the need to apply more of the product. I personally recommend that my patients avoid menthol-containing products altogether."
