Shortly after grabbing headlines for that viral altercation with Nicole Kidman at the Balenciaga show a few months ago, Salma Hayek has come under fire for yet another reason.
The internet had a lot of thoughts (most of them negative) after the House of Gucci actress made some comments about feeling pressured to work and earn money, due to the fact that she is married to billionaire François-Henri Pinault. Keep reading for more details…
Salma Hayek Makes Controversial Comments About Working In 'WSJ' Interview
The 58-year-old Magic Mike's Last Dance actress opened up about her 15-year-marriage to the Kering CEO and Groupe Artémis president in a candid interview with The Wall Street Journal.
In the interview, the ageless actress confessed that she and her husband keep their finances separate, while also revealing that "there's no prenuptial agreement dividing assets." And it's because of these separate finances, Hayek says, that she works as hard as she does!
"I support a lot of the aspects of my life and myself," the Frida alum told the pub, adding: "I have the pressure to make a certain amount of money, and I like it. And now, I decided, I want to make more."
Salma Hayek's Comments Divide The Internet
As expected, Hayek's comments got mixed reactions online. "I'd like to have those problems," quipped one X user. "Poor little thing," wrote another, as someone else added: "These people have no hardship in their lives so they make fake struggles to keep the focus on themselves. It's a wealthy democrat class of narcissists."
"I wonder if she's clueless how her issues appear to the average person when groceries are sky high for working families who are barely meeting budget," commented another person, this time in the comment section of a Daily Mail article. "She's so tone deaf but then again they don't live in the real world," wrote a second, as a third said: "I think that's an odd comment to make. There's quite a gap between 'gold digger' and 'under the strain to make money' when your spouse has such immense wealth."
"'I want to make more' sounds like pure greed to me," slammed a fourth, as a fifth said: "She sounds so out of touch here it's frightening. I mean you might think these things in her position but you certainly wouldn't say them when half the planet lives in poverty."
Many others did jump to her defense, with one person saying on X: "It's interesting to hear her perspective! Financial independence can be important, regardless of one's partner's wealth her drive is commendable."
"Good. Strong independent equals remember!" exclaimed another. "She's not after his money, she wants to earn her own. Isn't that what we all want to do?" asked another, as someone else said, "This is admirable." "I wish her success," commented another fan.
