Savannah Guthrie is on the road to recovery! The Today co-host was noticeably absent from Tuesday’s episode, but she reassured fans that she would be “back in business” soon. Sharing a health update and photo on Instagram of a bandaged eye, Guthrie explained that she had to undergo a procedure.
This is actually Guthrie’s third eye surgery, and she says it will be her last. The television personality first suffered an eye injury in November 2019 when her son threw a toy train at her face and has been experiencing some vision issues since. She first underwent surgery in December of that year. Then, this past July, Guthrie had cataract surgery. At the time, she shared the news on Instagram, writing, “Seeing all the colors a little brighter today… I’m so grateful my surgery was a success! I’m still healing but already noticing a major improvement in my vision.”
“So much gratitude to my gifted surgeon @abrissettemd and her amazing team! See you later this week on TODAY! And when I say ‘see you’ – I really mean it,” Guthrie added.
She described her follow-up operation this past week as her “last teeny tiny eye surgery.”

Guthrie’s doctor, Dr. Ashley Brissette, shared the post on her page as well, writing, “I love helping my patients see better again.”
In July 2020, Guthrie detailed some of her disorienting systems. "Remember when my retina was detached because Charley threw the train at my eye? Well, guys it's not over. So apparently after you have that retina reattachment surgery, it's very common to get cataracts, so that happened to me," she explained. "So I'm actually going to leave in 20 minutes and have cataract surgery."
"Lots of people have had cataract surgery or their parents have had cataract surgery ... It's very common in the elderly, but it happens if you have this retina detachment surgery. Once they remove that blur, I think it will be a lot better," Guthrie added.
Plenty of well-wishers were quick to share their hopes of a speedy recovery for Guthrie. The Today Show's official page commented, "Sending well wishes!"
Kristen Welker, an NBC White House correspondent and Today Show weekend co-anchor commented, "Sending you love for a speedy recovery!!"
Tamron Hall, host of the Tamron Hall Show, wrote, "Sending love."
Here's hoping feels better soon!
